Eastfield Black Bandit Wins Aberdeen-Angus National Show
2009-09-23

Described by many ringsiders as one of the best displays of Aberdeen-Angus stock ever seen, the breed’s National Show held at the Royal County of Berkshire Show, Newbury, at the weekend (19-20 September), saw more than 120 Aberdeen-Angus cattle forward and exhibitors travelling from many corners of the UK to compete at this prestigious event.

And it was some of the furthest travelled that picked up the championship places. Taking the male and overall championship under judge and renowned breeder Neil Massie of the Blelack herd was Eastfield Black Bandit H876 from Messrs T H Brewis, Kelso, Roxburghshire. Born February 2008, Black Bandit is by Rawburn Rochester E242 and is out of Eastfield Blackbird C338. Shown by Ewan Brewis’ stock manager Iain McGillivray, this bull has been unbeaten in his classes since last year where he was first at the National calf show in Edinburgh in November, before taking a first and reserve champion at the Border Union Show this year as well as first and overall champion at Berwick Show.

Described by Mr Massie as “a good young bull with great length, elevation, legs and one of the best heads he has seen on an Aberdeen-Angus bull for a long time”, he is adamant this is a bull with a great future. Black Bandit has a terminal index of +33 and a self replacing index of +33 and will be sold at the Stirling bull sales in October.

Taking the reserve and female champion spot was John and Teena Gilmour of J Gilmour Co Ltd, Macmerry, East Lothian. In the hands of Richard and Carol Rettie who have been housing and exhibiting the Belhaven show team this summer, Belhaven Ruisseau H062 caught the eye of Mr Massie for being a correct, stylish and well balanced heifer. Born February 2008, she is by Vermilion Payweight J847 and is out of Prairielane 6009 Rosebud 8022. She has immense figures to match with a terminal index of +42 and a self replacing index of +46.

Both the reserve male and reserve female championship spots were won by Andrew Brown of Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk. His reserve male champion Hawstead Lodge Eric H163, shown by Kevin Byford, stood second to Black Bandit and is by the herd’s stock bull Nightingale Panimure E281 and is out of Curzon Ebonnie V26. He will now be retained as the herd’s junior stock bull for the 80-cow herd.

The reserve female champion, Hawstead Lodge Pamela E042, is a January 2005 born daughter of Blelack Blackberet A241 out of Hayrish Petula A033. Shown with her April born Nightingale Panimure calf at foot, she has picked up countless championships in her time as a two year old heifer as well as native interbreed at this year’s East of England Show and female interbreed champion at Edenbridge and Oxted Show.
