Fedneyhouse Limousin Sets 14,000gns Sale Record

A retirement sale from one of the Province’s most successful pedigree Limousin herds saw a new record for a Limousin bull sold at auction in Northern Ireland when French-bred stock bull, Ulm, went under the hammer for 14,000gns.

Recognised breeders as well as potential new breeders from all four corners of Britain and Ireland were at the Pedigree Sales Arena, Moira on Monday 28th September for the sale from the award-winning Fedneyhouse Limousin Herd on behalf of John and Margery Adams, Fedney House, 50 Shot Lane, Banbridge, Co Down.

The 14,000gns Ulm is sired by Mas du Clo and out of the Dauphin-sired daughter, Nivelle. His visual appeal of excellent conformation, growth and muscle is backed up by figures putting him squarely in the Top 1% for Beef Value, 400 Day Growth, Muscle Depth and Muscle Score. Ulm, who has had an outstanding effect on the Fedneyhouse herd with stock selling to 8,000gns in addition to many show winners, now joins the Hawthorne Limousin herd of Paedar Hughes, Killyman, Dungannon.

The newly established Hawthorne herd bought 8 cattle in total including the six top-priced lots after stiff competition from many other eager buyers. Topping his female purchases at 11,000gns was the French cow, Alrance, by Highlander when selling with her Ulm daughter, Elrance, and back in calf to Ulm.

This was followed by Fedneyhose Armelle, a Milbrook Tanko daughter out of the imported cow Lumbylaw Nellie at 5,500gns. A stylish cow, back in calf to Nebo Amazon, she also joins the Hawthorne herd. The same buyer bought an Ocean daughter, Fedneyhouse Vanrose, with her Ulm bull at foot for 5,200gns.

Next on Mr Hughes “shopping list” at 5,200gns was Fedneyhouse Vanity, a daughter of the French bull Opus imported by Berry Bros, Banbridge in 2000. Vanity, who was PD’d in calf to Ulm, was sold separately from her December heifer calf Divia, who in turn attracted a great deal of interest when finally knocked down to the same buyer for 5,000gns.

The top price of the in-calf heifers was 4,800gns paid for Fedneyhouse Chloe, a May 2007 born Ulm daughter and PD’d in calf to Haltcliffe Underwriter. She joins the herd of the Rodgers Family, Ballynahinch. The Rodgers Family were prominent again, buying a Liberal-Mn and Fedneyhouse Vanrose daughter, Fedneyhouse Chanel, for 4,500gns.

George McCague, bought the next top priced heifer, Fedneyhouse Caitlyn, in calf to Glenrock Vigrant to join his Bridgeview herd at Newry for 3,600gns. 6 maiden heifers peaked at 2,400gns for a June 2008 Ulm daughter, Fedneyhouse Debutante, to the Rodgers Family.

The trade for recipient crossbreds carrying a range of embryos was similarly strong with 5 of the 8 recipients going across the water. Tops at 3,100gns was an embryo from Bryan McElroy’s champion show cow, Bridgeford Saskia, and by either Wilodge Tonka or Haltcliffe Underwriter. She was purchased by Paul Brown of the Rathconville herd, Co Armagh. Ulm embryos out of the Faignant-bred cow, Napolie, and classified by Interlim Genetique Services as “the best cow in maternal quality and milking ability” averaged 2,425gns. 3 crossbred heifers with embryo calves at foot peaked at 4,000gns for an Ulm x Fedneyhouse Aruna bull calf, given by the Rodgers Family.
