Students Win Scholarships from Agricultural Society

Three young Staffordshire men have been awarded scholarships from the Staffordshire and Birmingham Agricultural Society to help fund their studies at Harper Adams University College.

Tom Mason from Eccleshall, Jonathan Colman from Batesway Brereton, Rugeley and James Hollis from Newborough, Burton-on-Trent, competed against more than twenty other students from institutions across the region to receive the scholarships, which were formally presented at this year’s Staffordshire County Show. The award includes a payment of £1000 to help fund their tuition fees.

20-year-old Tom is studying Rural Enterprise and Land Management (REALM) at the University College and is surprised and delighted to win the award. He said: “I’ve been heavily involved with the scouts and I believe that it worked in my favour because of my experiences of working with children in a rural environment.

“The money is fantastic because it gets paid directly to Harper Adams towards my fees and I’m really pleased to receive this recognition.”

The Staffordshire and Birmingham Agricultural Society plays a leading role in the development of agriculture and the rural economy within the region. Its work includes support for business and social welfare in rural communities, education and regional shows and events.

Agriculture student Jonathan, aged 22, said: “I’m absolutely thrilled to win the scholarship, it’ll be a great help towards my final year of study.

“Hopefully the money that I saved through this will allow me to travel after completing my degree to discover what the rest of the world has to offer in agriculture, and bring some of those ideas back to Britain.”

21-year-old James is studying Agricultural Engineering. He said: “I’m very proud, it’s an excellent opportunity to take advantage of and it’s nice to see that people are keen to help out students at Harper.

“It’s great seeing everyone turn out to recognise our achievements and It’ll be good to show that there opportunities are out there, and support from back home.”
