Hampshire Down Set New Female Record Price
Hampshire Down females met a strong trade and established a new 2,000gns female breed record in Carlisle on Saturday 24 September at the breed association’s north west region sale.
Sale leader at 2,000gns was the champion, a ewe lamb within the breed’s top 25% SRS Index from EB and SA Jones’ Maes-Glas flock, Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire. Sired by Maes-Glas Hercules and out of homebred ewe, she had already secured six breed championships this season including the Royal Welsh. She sold to David Cormack and Gaynor McDowell, Billesdon, Leicestershire who also purchased a shearling ewe from Maes-Glas by Lindsey Hunter for 600gns.
The Jones also offered at 500gns a shearling ewe by Maes-Glas Musketeer to Paul Strickland, Lancaster, Lancashire.
The day’ second highest call at 1,200gns was a ewe lamb by Ballycreelly Devilsadvocate and out of a Wattisfield What Not sired ewe from the KP and AE McCarthy, Comber, County Down to T McGrath, Dungannon, County Tyrone.
The McCarthys also led the shearling ewe trade with an entry at 750gns to Jodie Hooks, Northallerton, North Yorkshire. A Ballycreelly Why Not sired ewe, she was sold in lamb with twins to the breed’s 2016 highest rated SRS ram, Yarcombe Flashman. Louise Forrest, Lockerbie, Dumfriesshire secured two shearling ewes from the McCarthy’s Ballycreelly flock, first to go was an entry by Why Not at 510gns followed at 500gns for a Yarcombe Topper sired lot. A second 500gns bid was made for a same way bred two crop ewe from Ballycreelly. The buyer was C Padgett, Caton, Lancashire.
Jodie Hooks went to 560gns for a shearing ewe by Glenrafon Marley from Jennifer Borsey and Martin Sivill, St Asaph, Denbighshire, and for 480gns she secured the overall reserve champion, an older ewe by Westland Domino from EJ Cresswell, Diss, Norfolk.
Breed newcomers, M and E Drummond, Maybole, Ayrshire purchased two shearling ewes from G and J Galbraith, Kendal, Cumbria. Their first lot at 560gns was by Gilstrop George, and at 550gns they secured an entry by Clogherny Hogan.
Geoff and Helen Mountain, Harrogate, North Yorkshire offered their highest entry, a shearling ewe by Thorbeck Enzo at 520gns to DR Kermeen, Andreas, Isle of Man.
