Limousin Stalwarts take North East Club Herd Honours
Jim and Margaret Bloom, who run the Scorboro pedigree Limousin herd at Decoy Farm, Scorborough, near Driffield in East Yorkshire, have secured the prestigious champion herd title in the North East Limousin Breeders Club 2016 herd competition.
Judge this year was Mary Reynolds, who runs the Rhy herd at Bordon, Hampshire, and results were announced at the club’s annual dinner, held at the Bridge Inn, Walshford, Wetherby.
The Blooms, who had first picked up the 2016 large herd title and also had the best stock bull in Fenomen, originally produced commercial cattle, before establishing their Scorboro pedigree herd in 1985 and at the same time became members of the British Limousin Cattle Society. Mr Bloom is a former national chairman.
The 2016 reserve champion herd was the first prize medium herd, the Barrons herd run by Willie Barron at Morrow Edge, Farm, Burnhope, in County Durham. He had won the overall herd championship for the previous three years, this year also picking up first prize for the best 2016-born calf, Barrons Maisey.
The best new entrant was County Durham’s John Murray, who runs the Haneve herd in West Butsfield, Tow Law, Bishop Auckland. He was also responsible for the first prize young bull, Haneve Luigi.
The Tomschoice pedigree herd of James and Sarah Cooper, based at Hill Top Farm, Dacre, Harrogate, won the extra large herd competition. Mr Cooper is an executive member and national representative of the British Limousin Cattle Society.
Winner of the extra small herd competition was the Kaprico herd, run by Carole Stafford, in Houghton-le-Spring, County Durham. The herd is no stranger to success in the annual highlight, winning the NELBC best small herd category no less than ten times and being chosen as best overall herd in 2013.
This year’s small herd victor was James Tennant’s Lissett herd from Fraisthorpe, Bridlington in East Yorkshire.
The first prize cow and calf came from Mrs Pat Varley’s Queenshead herd in Queensbury, Bradford, with Queenshead Izzie and Millie, while the young heifer class winner was David Jordon, of the Longhirst herd in Morpeth, with Longhirst Lucinda.
Winner of the progeny and stock bull class was Mark Woolhouse, of the Rachels herd in Driffield, with Proctors General.
