Irish buyers set the pace this week at the Aberdeen-Angus bull sales at Perth
paying three of the top eight prices for bulls and the top price for females.
Leading the Irish charge was businessman, Robert Putz, Cashelane,
Durrus, Bantry, Co Cork, and Dublin solicitor and former Irish
rugby international, Donal Spring, Bornacoola, Carrick on Shannon,
Co Leitrim, who joined forces to pay the second highest price of
11,000gns for the reserve supreme and reserve senior champion.
Their purchase, Balmachie Rannai D005, a 23 month old son of Netherton
Kiwi Sam A141, was consigned by John Lascelles, and his son, also
John, from Balmachie, Carnoustie, Angus, who were selling at Perth
for the first time since 1981 – when they also won the reserve
              championship.
Kiwi Sam is full of top breeding, including the 16,000gns former
breed record priced cow, Kim of Fordafourie – from a New
Zealand embryo – on his sire’s side.
Mr Putz also bought a three year old cow, Tofts Polly Perkins
C603, by Tofts Dynamic A177, from Mr Lascelles at 2000gns.
The 11,000gns price helped boost the average for Aberdeen-Angus
bulls by more than £1000 to £4398.33 – a record
for the autumn sale - for 36 head compared with £3332 for
              41 bulls last year.
Third top price of the sale was 8000gns paid by A McElroy, Glenross
House, Lasnarrick, Irvinestown, Co Fermanagh, for the intermediate
champion, the 21 month old Lorabar Rocky E166, by the American
sire, Ankonian Elixir 100. A full brother was supreme champion
last year and sold for the top price of 24,000gns.
Ryanair chief executive, Michael O’Leary, took time off
from his stalking of Aer Lingus to buy a second prize bull for
his 60-cow herd at Gigginstown, Mullingar, Co Westmeath. Mr O’Leary
was not present at the sale but his farm manager, Gerry Smyth,
went to 5000gns to secure the reserve junior champion, Arnydie
Black Saracen E141, by Ellin Erroneous C570, from first time exhibitor,
Miss Linda McKendrick, Bankhead, Peat Inn, Cupar, Fife.
Top price of the sale was 16,000gns bid by well-known Charolais
breeder, Neil Barclay, and his son, Stewart, Harestone, Crathes,
Banchory, Kincardineshire, for the second prize Haymount Wavacca
E511 from the old-established Haymount herd of J and W Arnott,
              Haymount, Kelso, Roxburghshire.
Supreme and senior champion was the two year old, Carlhurlie Enigmatic
D425, by Skaill Express A407, which sold for the fourth highest
price of 6000gns to J O Adams and Son Ltd, Park House, Watford,
              Northampton.
Top price for females was 5500gns for a yearling heifer in the
draft from David Lucas, Cheeklaw, Duns, Berwickshire. The heifer,
Cheeklaw Emelia E200, by Tweedside Jewgal Eric Z083, had a successful
show season this year and is full sister to a bull sold to Northern
Ireland for 8500gns. She was purchased by Matthew Goulding, Ceol
Na Mara, Kilmore, Ballyduff, Co Kerry.
This was followed at 5000gns for the reserve female champion,
Rawburn Duchess Windsor D337, by Rawburn Eldorado B175, from John
Elliot, Roxburgh Mains, Kelso, Roxburghshire. The buyer was John
Gilmour and Co, Macmerry, East Lothian.
The champion, Hurdcott Emily E179, a yearling daughter of Wedderlie
Ebtide A170, from Lord and Lady Glendyne, Craigeassie, Forfar,
Angus, sold for 2000gns to J and L Greer, Tildarg, Ballyclare,
              Co Antrim.
