Bownass Lleyn lambs land first Skipton title

A decision by North Craven farmer John Bownass to move into the pure-bred Lleyn sheep arena in 2000 paid off handsomely when he achieved a debut championship success by presenting the champion pen of ten ewe lambs at Skipton Auction Mart. (Tues, Oct 10)

The show class formed part of the major annual sale of over 5,000 breeding sheep and John, of Field Gate, Giggleswick, saw his victors go on to make £63 per head when purchased by JG Morton, of Kirkland, Penrith.

“I had 35 Lleyns at the outset and the flock has grown to 200 ewes, all now home-bred. I have been selling off the surplus for a couple of years and it is pleasing to see that Lleyns are now becoming more popular as a fattened lamb generally,” said John, who puts all his wether lambs through Skipton.

Top price of the show sale at £65 a head fell to the third prize pen from R&B Thwaite, of Coniston Cold, bought by A&N Starkie, of Padiham.
