Longtown Primestock Sale

The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. had forward 70 prime cattle, 12 young beef bulls, 5,253 prime hoggs and 4,881 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 11th January, 2007.

In the prime cattle the trade for heifers was slightly dearer by 1.5p whilst bullocks were down on average by 1p.

Heifers sold to 130.5p, 128.5p for Limousin from Messrs Blaylock, Hallburn, both purchased by Border Meats, Lockerbie, others to 128.5p Sceughdyke, 126.5p, 125.5p Hallburn. Belgian Blues to 126.5p from The Becks to Border Meats.

More heavyweight bullocks were on offer selling to 129.5p for Limousin from Messrs Sisson, Fenton and Messrs Nicholson, The Gill to Messrs Nattrass, Butcher, Carlisle, other Limousin to 128.5p The Gill & Hallburn, 127.5p Brydekirk Mains, 126.5p Hallburn, 125.5p Houghton House.

Young bulls were also dearer on the week selling to 139.5p for Limousin from Southlambhill, 124.5p, 123.5p Hallburn.

The prime hoggs which saw the best export types similar whilst mules and horned types were easier. Top was £64 for Texels from Haughhead, Innerleithen, export sorts to 130.5p for Beltex from Highgreenhill.

Lightweight hoggs peaked at £42 and 120.6p for Texels from Sorbie Farm and averaged 92.2p. Other Texels £38.80 Burnhouse, Suffolks £34 Lighthouse, Hill Cheviots £36.20 Pingle, Cheviot x £34.20 Barnglieshead, Greyface £32.50 Harden, Blackface £30 Glenwhargen, North Cheviots £33.80 Cara View, Swaledales £26 Bullshill, Lleyn £31 Meikle Richorn.

The cast ewes and ram were a larger show and with all buyers keen, met with a sharper trade on the week.

Top was £64.50 for Texel ewes from Birdstone, £59.50 Westhouse. North Cheviot to £51.50 Westhouse, Greyface £46.50 Birdstone, Cheviot Mules £49.50 Torwoodlee Mains, Leicesters £51.50 Easter Dounie, Beltex £58.50 Birdstone, Zwartbles £32.50 Easthouse, Charollais £48.50 Ballyclare, Suffolk x £51.50 Ballyclare, Suffolk £50.50 Glebelands.

Hill ewes to £37.50 for Cheviots from Smalmstown & Easthouse, Swaledale £27 Sceughdyke, Blackfaces £31.50 Sykehead, Lleyns £31.50 Glebelands.

Rams to £54.50 for Texels from Lighthouse & Westhouse, Suffolks £46.50 Beckfoot, Cheviot £44.50 South Beachmore, Leicesters £45 Briarlea, Blackfaces £30.50 Beckfoot, Lleyns £35.50 Beckfoot. Goats to £26.50 Ballyclare.
