The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. had forward
87 prime cattle, 4 young beef bulls, 6,176 hoggs and 5,405 cast
ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday
1st February, 2007.
The prime cattle were a good show with averages the same as
last week.
Top was 137.5p for a Belgian Blue heifer from Corby Castle Estate,
Great Corby and purchased by Messrs Nattrass, Butchers, Carlisle.
Limousin heifers to 133.5p, 130.5p Corby Castle to Messrs Nattrass,
others 132.5p, 130.5p Hallburn to West Scottish Lamb & W
Kirkup, Butcher, Longtown, 128.5p Wyseby Hill Cottage. Charolais
heifers to 128.5p Hallburn to Border Meats, 125.5p Sceughdyke.
Limousin bullocks to 134.5p from Hallburn to W Kirkup, others
130.5p The Gill, 128.5p, 127.5p Hallburn.
A poor show for quality in the bull section with Limousins to
102.5p Laws Hall.
A larger entry of prime hoggs were a firm trade peaking at £63
for Texels from Chapel House, Gilsland. Other Texels £57, £55

The sale included the annual
show and sale of Swaledale prime hoggs, judged by John Mitchell of Dunbia and sponsored by The
Swaledale Sheep Breeders Association. 1st prize pen was awarded
to Messrs Bindloss, Shap Abbey for 45kilo selling at £50
to the judge. 2nd Messrs Watson, Sanders Close for 48 kilos selling
at £47.80 to Welsh Country Foods, 3rd to Messrs Dawson,
Kentmere Hall for 44 kilos selling at £44.
The cast ewes and rams attracted more buyers as a result all
classes were again firmer on the week to average £34.05
overall.
