Longtown Primestock Sale

The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. had forward 83 prime cattle, 4 young beef bulls, 3,624 prime hoggs and 5,287 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 18th January, 2007.

Skipton Christmas prime lambs champions

All classes of clean cattle were cheaper on the week. Top price of 135.5p for a Limousin heifer from Hallburn to Border Meats, followed at 130.5p Beechfield, 129.5p Hallburn, 128.5p Southlambhill, 126.5p Englishtown and Southlambhill. Blonde heifers 126.5p Mosstower to Messrs Nattrass, Butcher, Carlisle. Belgian Blues 131.5p, 129.5p Mosstower to Messrs Nattrass & Border Meats, others 127.5p Hallburn.

Limousin bullocks 128.5p, 127.5p Hallburn, 127.5p Houghton House & Brydekirk Mains, 126.5p Brydekirk Mains, Blondes 123.5p Hallburn.

A small show of young bulls were also cheaper on the week with Limousins to 106.5p Gallowberry.

The prime hoggs were a smaller show and were considerably dearer peaking at £57.50 and 151.4p for Beltex from Clifton Moor, others £51 Inglewood Edge, £50 Stubsgill. Suffolk x £51 Jacksonsrigg, Hill Cheviot £42 Snowden Close, North Country Cheviot £52.50 Jerriestown, Charollais £50.20 Sykehead, Halfbreds £49 High Moat, Greyface £49.50 Miller Hill, £48.50 Williamston, Blackface £46.80 Sceughdyke, Hott Farm, Cheviot Mules £49 Sykehead, Swaledales £38 Aimshaugh, Rough Fell £39 Ashfield.

Lightweight lambs were considerably sharper and short of requirements. Top was £53 for Beltex from Clifton Moor, Suffolk x £36.20 Yarpha, Cheviot x £37 Hallburn, Texel £38 Underwoodhouse, Charollais £36.50 Brackenthwaite, Greyface £36.80 Stackbraes, Blackface £34.50 Dunain Mains, North Country Cheviot £37.50 Yarpha, Swaledale £32.50 High Greenside, Herdwicks £34.20 Fordlands, Rough Fells £29.50 Lockholme Hall and Ashfield.

The cast ewes and rams were another large entry with the usual buyers and trade firmer. Top was £70.50 for heavy Texel ewes from Waterloo and Greenend. Leicesters £46.50 Hartside, Suffolk x £52.50 Ballyclare, North Country Cheviot £48.50 Waterloo, Greyface £44.50 Clifton Moor and Mossknowe, Halfbreds £48.50 Huntington, Charollais £56.50 Newry, Beltex £58.50 Ballycastle, £56.50 Stackbraes, Cheviot Mules £40.50 Stackbraes.

Hill ewes to £34.50 for Cheviots from Smalmstown, Blackfaces £33.50 Stooprigg, £30 Maxton, LLeyns £33 Waterside, Swaledales £21.50 Grange.

Rams sold to £56.50 for Suffolks from Smalmstown, Leicesters £47.50 Denton Mains, Texels £54.50 Ballyclare. Beltex £44.50 Waltonwoodhead & Ballycastle, Charollais £46.50 Mossburnford, Blackface £27.50 Easthouse, LLeyns £42.50 Denton Mains, Swaledales £29.50 Randleholm, goats £29, £27 Grange.
