Longtown Primestock Sale

The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. had forward 69 prime cattle, 7 young beef bulls, 4,898 hoggs and 5,087 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 8th February, 2007.

Skipton Christmas prime lambs champions

Top in the prime cattle was a Limousin bullock at 135.5p from Messrs. Blaylock, Hallburn to Woodhead Bros., others to 131.5p Hallburn, 129.5p Loughrigg, 127.5p Houghton House. Charolais 125.5p, 124.5p Hallburn, Belgian Blue 126.5p Hallburn, 122.5p The Gill, Simmental 123.5p Hallburn, 109 Sceughdyke.

Heifers sold to 133.5p for Limousin from Hallburn to Border Meats, others 123.5p, 122.5p Hallburn, Belgian Blues 117.5p Englishtown.

Young bulls topped at 110.5p for Limousin from Shankfieldhead, Friesians 104.5p, 98.5p Woodslee.

The prime hoggs met a rising rrade and saw all customers eager for sheep. Top was £59.20 for Texels from MacTaggart Bros, Craigview, other Texels £56 Hermitage. Suffolks £59 from Crawsknowe, other Suffolks £55.20 The Beeches, Hill Cheviots £50 Clerkhill, North Country Cheviots £56, £55.50, £54.50 Craig View, Charollais £55.50 Tarnflatt, Cheviot Mules £52.80 Kirkland Green. Greyfaces £53.50 Kelmore Hills, £52 Guards Mill, Justicetown and Third Farm. Blackfaces £53 Allanton & Sceughdyke, Halfbreds £54.20, £54 Kirkbarrow Hall, Swaledales £47 Sykehead, Leicesters £53.20 Kilnstown.

Light lambs were in short supply and were pounds dearer than recent weeks peaking at £52.20 for Beltex from Thornthwaite, others to £44 Lurgan Farm. Suffolk x £37.20 Hallburn, Cheviot x £39, £37.20 Allanton, Texels £44.80 Sorbie, Charollais £44.80, £43.20 Northgreenhill, Greyfaces £37.20 Acreknowe, Blackfaces £40.80 Upper Glendivan Cottage, Swaledales £35.50 Westernhopeburn.

The cast ewes and rams attracted more buyers and trade was again sharper to average £36.03 overall.
