As in previous years, Limousins again ruled supreme at Skipton Auction Mart’s annual Autumn pedigree event for beef breeding cattle. (Wed, Oct 8)

Champion was an 18-month-old bull from the Kirkview herd of WE Salisbury & Son, based at Treales, Kirkham, near Preston, who also landed the title at the corresponding fixture in 2006 and last year headed the selling prices – again both with Limousins.
Exhibited by Will Salisbury, this year’s victor, Kirkview Cougar, is by the family’s highly regarded stock bull Croftlimousin Voldemort, purchased as an embryo calf for its breeding potential for 2,000 guineas at two-months-old. The dam is Springsett Ubet.
The champion returned to near its roots when acquired for 1,700 guineas by WD Hayhurst, of Longridge, Preston.
Reserve champion – like the title winner making its first appearance in the exhibition arena - was a May, 2007 Limousin bull from the West Yorkshire-based Brontemoor herd of renowned breeder Steven Priestley, Hill Top Farm, Denholme. Brontemoor Cyrus is by Sultan, imported from France by Mr Priestley, out of Brontemoor Sparrow.
Several other bulls sold for 1,700 guineas, including a Limousin son of Haltcliffe Hercules from SW Littlewood, of New Mill, Huddersfield, to local buyer Ian Parkinson, of Barden, and a well-bred two-year-old Charolais bull, whose sire has sold progeny at Perth to 7,000 guineas from W Richardson & Sons, Laverock Bridge, Kendal.
The buyer was Timothy Longton, a member of the famous sheepdog trialling family from Quernmore, Lancaster, who also experienced good trade at the mart on the same day when selling a consignment of 50 store cattle.
Show judge was local Limousin breeder Andrew Mason, of Embsay, with prize money donated by Wynnstay, Skipton, and Imel Ltd.
