Charolais Achieves All Breeds Perth Bull Sales Record
10/02/09

Charolais has achieved an all breeds record of 7,496 bulls sold for the highest average of £3,827 at the breed society’s official fixtures within the multi-beef breed weeks staged in February and October during the Perth Huntingtower centre’s 19 year span. In addition, Charolais holds the centre breed record at 55,000gns.

“Charolais has remained the dominant breed in Perth Huntingtower for virtually two decades, having sold the most bulls for the highest price, factors that reflect the breed’s unshakeable role as the leading terminal sire within the suckler herd,” commented the British Charolais Cattle Society’s David Benson. “Quite simply, no other breed has been able to surpass Charolais ability to deliver calves with such unbeatable weight for age and subsequent unbeatable returns.

“Charolais also led the overall centre trade at 55,000gns in 2006 for Thrunton Voldemort from the Campbell family, Alnwick, who offered the breed’s second highest lot at 45,000gns with Thrunton Ideal. Furthermore, 11 lots have sold for 30,000gns or more including Dingle Hofmeister who has had a major influence on the breed having been used in 110 herds and sired more than 1,000 registered progeny.” He adds: “While this month’s final sale marks the passing of an era at Perth, we look forward to continuing the breed’s indomitable impact at the new Stirling centre.”

UA’s David Leggat comments: “Reaching a record throughput of bulls for a record average has to be a great achievement for the Charolais breed considering it started from very small beginnings in Perth in the 1970s and has since worked hard to become Europe’s largest one day entry of Charolais cattle to be sold at auction. Such success reflects very highly on Charolais breeders and their society, and we look forward to continued success at the Perth bull sales’ new home at Stirling.”
