Red Rose beef and sheep farmer Jimmy Baines has retained his Craven Cattle Marts’ Stock Person of the Year title for 2009.

Mr Baines, whose family has farms in both Gisburn and Trawden, was the inaugural winner of the annual award, first introduced last year to recognise the contribution of regular vendors at Skipton Auction Mart – and honour a champion among them.
Points are awarded for both prize winners at livestock shows and highest priced stock in several categories at weekly sales throughout the year.
Mr Baines, a regular monthly prime stock vendor who was also individual prime sheep Farmer of the Year, received a cash prize from main sponsors, Silsden-based West Riding Toyota, with all mainline sponsors of Skipton livestock shows throughout the year also contributing to the awards.
The prime beef title fell to John and Alison Spensley, of Manor Farm, Thorlby, while Dairy Farmers of the Year were father-and-son Malcolm and Robert Swires, of Haverah Park, Beckwithshaw, Harrogate, whose Whinhill Holstein Friesian commercial herd is responsible for regular prize winners at Skipton dairy fixtures, show champions among them.
The store and breeding sheep title went to local Swaledale sheep breeder Roy Nelson, of C Nelson & Son, Lainger House Bordley, with store and breeding cattle honours awarded to the Fox farming family based at Withgill, Clitheroe.
