Mark Scores Top Marks on Skipton Calf Show Debut
2010-05-19

A pure-bred three-week-old Limousin calf from Cumbrian showman Mark Phillips was the pick of the youngsters at the May show of rearing calves at Skipton Auction Mart. (Mon, May 17)

Mark Phillips is pictured centre with his debut Skipton calf champion, joined by judge and buyer Phillip Summers, right, and BOCM Pauls’ Keith Colley.

Skipton calf champion

Mark, of Broadoak Farm, Ivegill, Carlisle, is a familiar face on the Limousin show circuit, regularly exhibiting champions and prize winners on behalf of high profile exhibitors, among them Tomschoice Limousins, of Dacre, Harrogate, and Millington Grange Estate, east of York. He is also in demand as a breed judge.

However, his first-ever appearance as a vendor in the calf show arena at Skipton proved a runaway success when Mark’s sole entry, by his stock bull Hudscales Churchill, clinched a championship and top price double when bought for £480 by the show judge, West Yorkshire farmer Phillip Summers, of High Birks Fireclay Works, Clayton, Bradford.

Mr Summers, a regular buyer and vendor of store cattle at Skipton, also purchased the title winner at the April calf show.

Reserve champion at this month’s renewal was a five-and-a-half-week-old British Blue-cross bull calf, by a Genus sire out of a true Friesian, from Frank Spence, of Glusburn. It sold for £342 to John Otterburn, Helmsley, with the 70 calves forward averaging £209.

Main sponsor of the monthly fixture, which continues to meet growing demand for premium quality calves across the region, was BOCM Pauls, supported by Midgley Motor Cars.
