Robin, reserve champion at the previous show, stepped up to bag top spot again - the Jennings family has won the title in the past - with a newly-calven Holstein Friesian heifer by their home-bred former dairy bull Stainbank Oxygen. Giving 33 litres, the victor sold for top call of the day at £2,000 to Geoff Blezzard, Ribchester.

Mr Blezzard, a familiar face at the Skipton dairy ringside, also paid £1,740 for GB Jennings' third prize newly calven heifer, a 27-litre daughter of Penn-England Garrison, along with £1,460 for the first prize newly calven cow from Derek Wells, of Woodlands Farm, Wilsden, Bradford, who continues to wind down his milking operation.

The reserve champion was the second prize newly calven heifer from Peter Baul, of M Baul & Partners, Bishop Thornton, which joined another Skipton regular Wick Williams, for £1,450. Nantwich-based Mr Williams also paid £1,580 and £1,490 respectively for the first and second prize in-calf heifers, both exhibited by Alan Simpson, of Oulston, York.

A strong maiden heifers class was won by Robert Metcalfe, of Brearton, Harrogate, his charge returning to the area when secured for £770 by Robert Johnson, Felliscliffe. Johnny Metcalfe, Linton, sent out the second and third in class, which both sold locally for £750 and £680 respectively to Simon Spensley, Gargrave.

Judge was Howard Southwell, Thornton-in-Craven. Newly calven heifers averaged £1,571, newly calven cows £910, in-calf heifers £1,530, in-calf cows £1,003 and maiden heifers £722.
