Welsh Black Sells for 11,000gns at Dolgellau

Caerynwch Major 6th, a 16 month old, home bred Welsh Black bull was sold for a top price of 11,000gns at the Society’s Winter show and sale on Tuesday 11 January 2011 at Dolgellau market.

Bred and sold by Mr TW Williams & Co, Caerynwch Farm, Dolgellau, the 750kg bull was bought by father and son Mr Meical Wyn Jones and Mr Sion Jones, Tyddyn Perthi, Penisarwaen, Caernarfon who run the Deiniolen and Perthi Herds respectively. The young sire was sired by Tallin Major (Vol 86) and out of Caerynwch Gladys 40th (Vol 89).

The Champion bull in the pre-sale show was Ysguboriau Llewelyn 51st which sold for 7,800gns. The 22 month old bull, weighing 860kgs was bred and sold by Mr William R Jones, Ysguboriau, Tywyn, and was bought by Mrs Beryl F Evans, Glanrafon, Talybont, Ceredigion. The bull was sired by Machreth Banner 7th (Vol 95) and out of Ysguboriau Vera 45th (Vol 95).

The 2nd prize winner to the champion was Gwril Ionawr (Vol 99) which sold for 3,800gns. Bred and sold by Mr Robert Pugh, Henblas, Llwyngwril near Tywyn, the 2 year old bull weighed 825kgs. The bull was sired by Caerynwch Ebrillwr 12th (Vol 95) and out of Gwril Medwen 3rd (Vol 95) and was bought by Mr JP Owen a’i Gwmni, Tai Pella, Gwytherin, Abergele in Denbighshire.

Ynysfor Meirion (Vol 99), at 21 months of age and weighing 835kgs, was sold for 3,700gns. Bred and sold by Mr Ken Ellis a’i Feibion, Ynysfor, Bryncrug, Tywyn as a guaranteed stock getter, he was bought by Messrs SG & MR Owen, Tynddraenen, Swyddffynnon, Ystrad Meurig in Ceredigion. The bull was sired by Rhydygarnedd Ceiriog (Vol 95) and out of Penwernhir Meg 3rd (Vol 93).

A 3rd prize winner in his class, Brysgaga Gwern 14th (Vol 99) was sold for 3,200gns. The 26½ month old bull, weighing 930kgs, was bred and sold by Mr Rowland Rees, Brysgaga, Bow Street, Ceredigion. Purchasing the bull was Mr &Mrs AJ Lloyd, Kilvrough Park Farm, Parkmill, Gower near Swansea. The bull was sired by Gwern-Cynyddion Erddyn 2nd (Vol 95) and out of Brysgaga Eirlys 20th (Vol 89).

Another four bulls shared a 3,000gns price tag.

Leading the trade in the female section was Graig-Goch Bet 49th (Vol 97) selling for 1,800gns. The 2½ year old in-calf heifer, served to the 2010 January Bull Champion at Dolgellau which sold for 14,000gns – namely Ysguboriau Brenin 75th – was a 2nd prize winner in the pre-sale show. Bred and sold by Mr Emyr Jones, Graig Goch, Nebo, Llanrwst in Denbighshire, the heifer was bought by Mr Richard Owen, Nant-yr-Efail, Betws-yn-Rhos, Abergele in Conwy. The heifer sold from a herd with Elite Health status also produced and sold for the Champion Maiden heifer Graig-Goch Memi 51st (Vol 98) which fetched 1,400gns. Purchasing this prize winning heifer was a young member, 16 year old Mr Carwyn Lewis, Gwarcoed Einon, Llanwennog near Llanybyther in Ceredigion.

Mr Emyr Jones sold Graig-Goch Memi 52nd (Vol 98), a 2nd prize winner to the champion maiden heifer, for 1,050gns. Purchasing the heifer was Mr G Jones, Caerau Isa, Rhyd-y-Clafdy, Pwllheli.

Both the maiden heifers were sired by Graig-Goch Gerwyn 29th (Vol 97) and out of Grai-Goch Memi 46th and 45th respectively.

The Champion Female at the sale, Ysguboriau Norma 37th (Vol 97) was sold for 1,400gns. The in-calf heifer who was served by Caerynwch Major 4th (Vol 98) was bred and sold by Mr William R Jones, Ysguboriau, Tywyn. The heifer was sired by Machreth Banner 7th (Vol 95) and out of Ysguboriau Norma 30th (Vol 87). Purchasing the prize winning female were Messrs Beardmore, New Hall Farm, Bronnington, Whitchurch, Salop.

Mr William Jones and family, Ysguboriau Herd, won both the Champion Bull and Champion Female Challenge cups on the performance of the home bred stock in the pre-sale show.

Another 3 females were sold at the sale from various vendors all selling for 1,000gns.

Summary
A cautious mood was observed at the sale with buyers keen to purchase pedigree breeding Welsh Black cattle but keeping a tight hold on the purse strings. Whilst only half the cattle were sold this January, as compared to 2010, the average price per head was comparative with several of the highest priced cattle per category on par to those recorded the previous year. Society Chief Executive, Mr Andrew James, said “33 buyers purchased a total of 45 animals, confirming that the majority of the sales were single purchases with several farmers mentioning openly the limited fodder in store and still only in the middle of winter”.
