Out of a dam by the Ellis’s own Kirkby Redgate sire, and sired by a home-bred ram that had a deep pedigree, including Lunesdale, Hewgill and Smearsett bloodlines, the title winner sold for the day’s top price of £750 to Brontë breeder A P Percival, who runs a small flock of Blue Faced Leicesters at Haworth.
Also hitting the highlights was local breeder Ashley Caton, of Otterburn. Ashley, who has achieved several triumphs in recent years at the big autumn NEMSA Mule lamb sales at Skipton, produced the second prize in-lamb ewe, expecting to Midlock X2, purchased from Scottish-based Blue Faced Leicester breeders J Wight & Son. Sired by a ram from the Bull & Cave flock of J Nelson, Clapham, she sold at £600 to G & G Schofield, Buckden.
In addition, Mr Caton was responsible for the second and third prize gimmer hoggs, both also sired by MIdlock X2 and with Long Green bloodlines on the dam’s side. They sold respectively at £450 to JC&N Throup, Draughton, and £300 to F Brown, Halifax.
Also trading sheep among the higher prices was the Laund flock of John Stott, based at Chipping, Preston, who sold ewes in-lamb to an Oak House sire to a top of £480, this purchased by D I Holliday, Clapham.
Other leading prices for in-lamb ewes were £420 for a shearling from Richard Mawson, Addingham, in lamb to a sire from Pendle breeder Richard Hargreaves, Barley, and £400 for a three-shear ewe from one of the keenest youngsters on the Leicester circuit, teenager William Wildman, from Kirkby Malham. William’s charge was by his own Oak House sire and in lamb to Midlock B64.
In-lamb sheep averaged £420.10 and ewe hoggs £304.28.
