Charolais bulls met a solid demand from commercial producers selling to a top of 5,200gns in Dungannon on Friday 4 March at the breed’s NI Club spring show and sale.

“This sale attracted a consistent trade underpinned by commercial suckler men confident they were investing in a bull which will leave calves that will outstrip any other crosses in weight and conformation, and subsequent profitability,” commented NI Charolais Club chair, Sandra Cochrane.
Sale topper at 5,200gns was the senior male and overall champion, Blossom Eoghan a rising two year old by Doonally New and out of a Knockanbawn dam by Enfield Plexus. Consigned by L Richardson and Sons, Maguiresbridge, Fermanagh, he was knocked down sold to G Wallace, Enniskillen.
The same vendors were in the money again at 4,200gns when they sold their first class prize winner, Hillviewfarm Egbert to S and M Black, Carnlough. Sired by Allanfauld Vagabond, this 18 month old was out of a Coolnaslee cow going back to Derrygiff Mills. The Richardsons offered another 18 month old Vagabond son, Hillviewfarm Elmo for 3,100gns to N McFarland, Sixmilecross. The same 3,100gns price tag accompanied their Hillviewfarm Errol, an 18 month old first prize winner by Oldstone Egbert to J Brown, Newtown Butler, while their Hillviewfarm Evis, a 21 month old Killadeas Jack son made 3,800gns to W McCloskey, Dungiven.
The day’s second top call of 4,500gns was paid by K Farrell, Filemiletown for Corryglass Excel, a 16 month old first class winner from Trevor Phair, Letterbreen, Enniskillen. Excel was by Pirate and out of a homebred dam going back to Doonally New.
Earlier on Trevor Phair collected the intermediate championship with Brogher Echo TI +34, SRI +37 and he sold for 4,200gns to A Wilson, Ballymena. This 18 month old was by Pirate and out of Brogher bred cow by Doonally New.
Two lots sold for 4,000gns each. First to go was Lisnadill Egbert, a rising two year old from GC King, Lisnadill, Armagh to L Buchanan, Strabane. A Nelson son, he was out of a Mullagh bred cow by Brampton Justwilliam.
John McGrath, Dromore, Omagh offered the second 4,000gns entry, Drumconnis Edward to R Watters, Stewartstown. This 19 month old was by the 25,000gns Goldies Unbeatable and out of a homebred cow by Roundshill Taurus.
Brantry, Dungannon based breeder, M McVeigh sold his 17 month old Gort Eoin for 3,800gns to M McLaughlin, Cushendall. Sired by Fieldview Budd, he was out of a Roxtown bred dam by Doonally New.
Next at 3,500gns was the reserve intermediate champion, Woodpark Embassador TI +27, SRI +29, a 17 month old by the 19,000gns reserve junior Perth champion, Corrie Alan and out of a homebred dam going back to Skidoo lines. Bred and exhibited by Will Short, Beragh, Omagh, he was knocked down sold to P McEvoy, Kilkeel. Earlier on, the same breeder offered Woodpark Eiger TI +32, SRI +35, a 21 month old Rumsden Eiger son, for 3,200gns to C Shaw, Carryduff.
The reserve junior male title went to Ramrad Eager, a 15 month old from RDA Morrow, Coleraine, Derry selling for 3,400gns to B Thompson, Newtownards. An Agharooskey Victor son, he was out of a homebred dam by Killadeas Outran. Minutes later another Victor son from the same breeder, this time the day’s junior champion, the 14 month old Ramrad Freddie made 3,300gns to P Gormley, Drumquin.
Another 3,300gns call secured the rising two year old Killadeas Ezra TI +28, SRI +31 for T Hamill, Downpatrick for father and son team, Stuart and David Bothwell, Ballinamallard, Fermanagh. A Dunlon Ulick son he was out of an Oldstone Egbert sired homebred dam. Another same age Ulick son, this time Killadeas Eric TI +26, SRI +29 sold for 3,200gns top G Rankin, Bready.
Beechdale Ecossais, a 19 month old by Dartonhall Brandy collected the reserve senior championship for G Donnelly, Ardmore, Derry and made 3,200gns to P Mullan, Garvagh. Another 3,200gns was made, this time from J McDowell, Magherafelt for Riverview Extreme, a 20 month old Doonally New son from N Hicks, Enniskillen, Fermanagh.
The day’s supreme female champion went to Brownhill Ellen, a 19 month old by Shaen Topper and out of a homebred dam going back to Simpsons Gregg. Bred and exhibited by the Devine Brothers, Strabane, Tyrone, she sold to E Johnston, Cookstown for 3,500gns.
