Skipton’s Showpiece Limousin Double-Header
2011-03-31

The countdown is on to Skipton Auction Mart’s annual Limousin fixture in May, staged in conjunction with the North East Limousin Breeders Club.

This year’s showpiece, featuring both the 2011 Northern Limousin Extravaganza (NLE), and Skipton’s Craven Limousin Day, the annual Spring show and sale of pedigree Limousin bulls and females, is a two-day event for the first time, being held on Tuesday and Wednesday, May 10 and 11.

First up from 4pm on the Tuesday is the NLE, which signals the start of the Limousin cattle show season in Yorkshire. The show-only is open to both pedigree and commercial Limousin cattle born in 2010 and is expected to draw a large entry in what is the breed’s milestone 40th anniversary year.

In previous years, animals entered for the NLE have gone on to scoop major prizes at some of the country’s most prestigious shows.

The 2010 male champion, the Haltcliffe Vermount-sired Tomschoice Elgar, from James and Sarah Cooper, of Dacre, Harrogate, went on to gain the overall Limousin championship at the Great Yorkshire Show later in the year and sold in the Autumn for £13,000gns.

The 2009 champion, Millington Davina, from Millington Grange Estate, east of York, progressed to become supreme champion at the Royal Show in the same year, realising 28,000gns when sold later in 2009.

The NLE venue provides a safe and secure start to the Limousin show season and allows breeders to ‘ring test’ potential show winners of the future. Prize money totals £2,000, including £150 for the overall champion and £75 for the reserve, with £100 for both the pedigree and commercial champions and £75 again for the respective reserves.

An open stock judging competition organised by the North East Limousin Breeders Club will also run alongside the NLE for the first time, while the afternoon will also enable pre-sale viewing of cattle entered for Wednesday’s premier ‘Red Event,’ the annual Limousin show and sale.

A record entry of animals for sale is expected, including drafts from the renowned Denholme-based Priestley Brontemoor and Embsay-based Mason Oddacres herds, which proved so popular last year.

The two show judges both hail from Shifnal, Shrophshire. Adjudicating at the NLE is Miss Christine Williams, an eminent breeder of many high calibre Limousin bulls, including Wilodge Vantastic and Wilodge Tonka, while Craven pedigree show judge is Paul Tippets, for many years a noted Limousin breeder and showman.

Ted Odgen commented: “These new arrangements reflect the growing stature of both the NLE and the Craven Limousin show and sale. The latter in particular has taken huge strides in recent years and now offers a great selection of Limousin cattle to purchase locally.”

NLE sponsors are AON, Bishopton Veterinary Group, British Limousin Cattle Society, Elite Beef Semen, I'Anson Bros, Intervet/Schering-Plough Animal Health, LEBC Group, Natural Stockcare, North East Limousin Breeders Club, Redcliffe Computers, Ripon Land Rover, Ripon Select Foods, Showtime, Tithebarn, Tomschoice Limousins, Yorkshire Agricultural Society, and Zintec.
