Open Day Confirms Strength of Worldwide Mating Service
2011-05-04

Leading UK AI company, World Wide Sires UK, has confirmed the strength of their Worldwide Mating Service (WMS) at a farm open day in Somerset.

A select group of 20 farmers were invited to the one day event, hosted by kind permission of Messrs G Pople and sons, Whitley Farm. The 225 strong milking herd, which is run on a purely commercial basis, was introduced to the mating programme six years ago and since then the Pople’s have never looked back.

James Pople is the herdsman at Whitley Farm and found it easy to get started with WMS as it is a free service and made business sense to him. Not being completely confident with genetics and matings, James found the advice from his WMS evaluator invaluable: “Initially we identified that udders, legs and feet were problem areas and I can now see a significant improvement in those problem areas. Cows are more uniform allowing them to be easier to manage long-term through housing and feeding.”

“Milk yields have also increased better satisfying the liquid contract and the longevity of the younger cows is already showing within the herd,” added James.

The WMS progeny were separated from the older cows that were born before the mating programme was introduced. Becky Bryer who attended the open day admired the younger animals coming through and said: “The event was very helpful and clearly explained the programme. I liked how different breeds can be added to the service and the independence of evaluators allows you to select any sire available in the UK.”

The day began with a presentation from the WMS manager Rob Braithwaite, who discussed the mating programme and how it works – noting the individual animal analysis and health trait breakdowns.

“The mating programme provides farmers with a semen manual, making their lives easier and saving time. WMS can have an enormous, positive impact on the productivity, profitability and quality of your herd, just as this impressive progeny of first generation daughters proves at Whitley Farm,” says Rob.
