Haffey’s Goldwyn Sara Claims Holstein Honours at Balmoral Show
2011-05-16

The father and son team of Phillip and Simon Haffey, Portadown, claimed the overall championship ribbons in the Holstein section at this year’s Balmoral Show.

Andrew Kennedy exhibited Copywood Goldwyn Sara 2 EX90, the Holstein champion and reserve interbreed dairy champion, owned by Phillip and Simon Haffey, Portadown.

The County Armagh duo, ably assisted by fitter, Andrew Kennedy, scooped the supreme championship award with their much-admired second calver, Copywood Goldwyn Sara 2 EX90. She later caught the eye of Welsh judge, Ewan Morgan, to take the reserve championship title in the dairy interbreed line-up.

Scottish judge, Hugh Neilson, who runs the noted 300-cow Overside herd based in Lanarkshire, described the Holstein champion as a well balanced dairy cow. “Numbers were disappointing, but there were some superb animals featured in the championship line-up. The overall winner oozes dairy character and has a super udder. She was really on form on the day!”

Copywood Goldwyn Sara 2 EX90 is one of 120 cows in the Glasson herd. She was purchased privately by Phillip and Simon Haffey as a six-week-old heifer calf, and has never been beaten in her class. Sired by Braedale Goldwyn, and bred from EX92 Copywood KJ Sara 2, she was crowned reserve overall champion at Holstein NI’s Irish National Holstein Show, held at Moira a couple of months ago.

Her show record includes reserve intermediate heifer champion at the Centenary Causeway Classic in 2009; junior champion at the RUAS Winter Fair in 2009, and reserve interbreed champion at the RUAS Winter Fair in 2010; Reserve All-Britain junior heifer in-milk in 2009; and best overall heifer in Holstein NI’s 2010 Herds Inspection Competition.

A delighted Simon Haffey said: “Sara calved at the end of October and is currently doing 57 litres per day. We have contract interest from several leading AI companies, and she has been flushed extensively to bulls such as Shottle, Jasper, Man O Man and Windbrook. “

The reserve Holstein champion was Wiltor Goldwyn Lausine EX92, owned by John Patterson and Sons, Crumlin. At the halter is Andrew Patterson.

Wiltor Goldwyn Lausine

Claiming the reserve overall championship ribbons, and the best udder award, was the popular Wiltor Goldwyn Lausine EX92, owned by John Patterson and sons, James and Andrew, from Crumlin, County Antrim.

“The two top-placed cows were very close, both displaying real dairy character and great udders. The reserve champion is super uddered cow, but unfortunately just lacked a bit of bloom on the day,” explained the judge.

Also sired by Braedale Goldwyn, she is bred from Ridgefield Cousteau Lausine, and calved her third - a bull calf by Duplex - in mid January.

Wiltor Goldwyn Lausine EX92 is a recent addition to the 120-cow Ballyginniff herd, having been purchased at the Stars of Sahara sale in September last year. She comes from the famous Canadian-bred Comestar Laurie Shiek family, and has chalked up several notable championship awards for the Patterson family, including the Irish National Holstein Show, followed by Emerald Expo in Kilkenny a few weeks ago.

The honourable mention, and exhibitor-bred championship awards, at this year’s Balmoral Show went to the junior champion, Clandeboye Champion Francesca VG86, owned by Lady Dufferin of Clandeboye Estates, Bangor, County Down. “This is a tremendous heifer, well balanced and displaying good size and strength for her age. She has a great udder and is a strong prospect for the future,” concluded Hugh Neilson.

Calved in mid November this heifer is projected to produce 11,500 kilos in her first lactation. This was Clandeboye Champion Francesca’s second outing on the local show circuit, and her increasing list of accolades includes honourable mention, exhibitor-bred champion and intermediate champion at the 2011 Irish National Holstein Show.

Scooping the reserve junior championship award was the fresh calved, Tirsvad Jasper Amber, owned in partnership by Phillip and Simon Haffey with Edgar and Jason Pollock, also from Portadown. She is by Wilcoxview Jasper, and is bred from the world-famous EK Oseeana Ambrosia EX92.

Honourable mention in the junior championship line-up was Iain and Joyce McLean’s Priestland 4876 GoldwynKaren; while the reserve exhibitor-bred championship went to Frocess Leader Agnes EX95, a senior cow brought out by Wallace Gregg from Cloughmills, County Antrim.
