The Mossrigg herd is owned by Jonathan and Joanne Fisher, who in a short period of time have developed a pedigree herd consisting of profitable, high producing, long lasting Holstein cows averaging 8,991kgs, 4.21%fat and 3.15%protein. In total there will be approximately:
290 cows & heifers in milk
117 In- calf heifers
170 maiden & heifer calves
Jonathan and Joanne Fisher and their family, branched out on their own just under nine years ago with 80 cows and followers from the family partnership of Messrs Fisher, Newton Moss. In this sale they are presenting a superb Holstein herd that is the fruition of their hard work. The sale has come about due to health reasons and Jonathan is hoping that purchasers will gain as much pleasure and satisfaction from developing these fine Holstein cows as he has:
“We have thoroughly enjoyed breeding and building up the herd here at Dolphenby Farm and we will be very sad to say goodbye to all our stock. I am looking forward to the next generation of stock coming on and hope that they exceed the expectations of their new owners.”
“I would like to take this opportunity to thank the family, friends, staff and suppliers who have supported us and the business since our start up, without their excellent assistance we would never have achieved so much so quickly.”
One of the outstanding sires that has had a positive effect on the Mossrigg herd is Picston Shottle and 35 of his daughters are included in the sale. They are impressive and are developing into super cows. Other sires who have also produced top two year olds include Drake, Baxter, Atlas, Bradley, BKB Affirmed, Bolton, Garrison, Relough Reformer and Dolman.
“The herd has benefitted from a combination of top class management and a defined breeding policy. Resulting in a medium sized, robust, fertile and efficient dairy herd, which will appeal to all sectors of the dairy industry,” says Harrison and Hetherington’s Pedigree Dairy Auctioneer Glyn Lucas.
“There are a number of animals in the herd that are late summer and autumn calving which will be attractive to milk producers who are looking for high yields in the autumn. Rises in the milk price are on the horizon and for any farmer wanting to benefit from a long life cow, this is definitely the sale to come to.”
On a walk through the herd, youth is something that immediately impresses; there are 105 cows in their second and third lactations, many giving over 40kgs per day. There are plenty of animals for the top breeder as well, with fancy young cows and calves from the breeds leading and most trusted cow families.
No herd is complete without mature cows and the Mossrigg herd can boast of numerous cows with impressive production awards. These cows are impressive from all angles and must be seen to be fully appreciated. There are 300 in-calf heifers, including bulling or young heifer calves, produced from the very best sires available including Atlas, Bonair, Talent, Jet Red, Breakout, Matson, Jeeves, Boliva Allen, Reece & Knowledge.
Sharing the rostrum with Glyn Lucas will be Andrew Templeton and Clive Norbury and Stuart Hassel from Wright & Manley. On the first day they will sell 290 cows and heifers in milk (including 60 heifer calves born in 2011) and on the second day there will be 230 in-calf and maiden heifers.
