PORK is becoming more popular for people eating out with the latest figures showing a six per cent rise.* The figures prepared for the Meat and Livestock Commission (MLC) on behalf of the British Pig Executive (BPEX) show a substantial improvement across the board.
In particular, pork chops are up 14 per cent on the previous year, and sausage sandwiches up by 24 per cent over the same period.
BPEX foodservice marketing manager, Tony Goodger, said: "The findings highlighted/confirmed the versatility of pork, which lends itself to both meal and snack formats and is popular among young and old consumers alike.
"Caterers should also bear in mind that consumer demands and tastes change regularly and that they are increasingly willing to try new food concepts.
"The quality of pork served will often determine repeat customers, so caterers should always ensure their pork cuts are of good quality and from a reputable supplier.
"To help consumers wanting quality pork, caterers should make sure they source pork carrying the Quality Standard Mark for Pork - which guarantees it has been produced to high standards of animal welfare and quality assurance - and then they must be sure to tell their customers."
