The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. had forward
83 Prime cattle, 4 Young bulls, 19 OTM, 309 Spring lambs, 5830
hoggs and 2773 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown
on Thursday 10th May, 2007.
ood quality heifers met a sharper trade and the rest were similar.
Top price was for a Limousin heifer at 139.5p from A & W
J Taylor & Son, Dashwellgreen and purchased by Wm Kirkup,
Butcher, Longtown, others to 138.5p Hallburn, 137.5p Southlambhill,
135.5p Dashwellgreen.
Bullocks sold to a top of 131.5p for a Limousin from Dashwellgreen,
others to 130.5p, 128.5p, 127.5p x 2, 126.5p Hallburn. Belgian
Blues 122.5p The Gill.
Young bulls were short of requirements and more could have been
sold, selling to a top of 107.5p x 2 for Limousin from Gardrum,
Friesian to 103.5p Laws Hall.
OTM cattle sold to 86.5p for Limousin cow from Gardrum, Friesian
heifers 76.5p, 74.5p Riddings Farm, Galloway heifers 71.5p Skitby.
Top price per head was £618.55 for Friesian cow from Smalmstown.
A much larger show of Spring lambs met a fast trade and were
short of requirements to average 125p overall. Top price was
139.4p for Texels from Drumcork, others to 132.6p Guards Mill,
Charollais 138.5p Whitehead Hill, Suffolks 128.7p Guards Mill,
others 126.6p from Kimmeter Green. Top price per head was £62.80
for Suffolks from Aikton Farm (Bragg), others to £58.20

The cast ewes and rams attracted the usual customers and all
classes easily maintained last weeks extreme rates to average £41.57
overall. Top was £82.50 for Texel rams from Ballyclare,

Bleu de Maines £66.50 Hillside, Charollais £70.50

Another large show of prime hoggs saw all buyers keen for sheep
up to 52 kilos being dearer by 10p per kilo. Heavy hoggs 55 – 62
kilos were no different on the week.
Top price per head was £51.10 for Texels from Messrs Harrison,
Sykehead, others £50.20 Boghead who also sold Suffolks
to £49.20, others to £48.80 Hilltop East, Cheviots £49.20
Elsdonburn, £48.80 Craig View, Greyfaces £48.80 Mainholm
and Hilltop East, North Country Cheviots £50.20 Craig View,
Blackfaces £48.30 Smalmstown.
Export hoggs were regularly making 105 to 115p per kilo to a
top of 119.3p for Cheviots from M Birnie, Cambeck Hill and averaged
110p overall.
Lightweight hoggs were another fast trade, mostly making between
100 and 110p per kilo to a top of £40.20 for Cheviots from
