Two new bulls entering the Semex UK portfolio, Blue-Haven-Ltd
Brick and Karona Bonair, are demonstrating the business’s
growing strength in meeting the needs of large-scale producers
with ever-increasing herd sizes, as well as pedigree breeders.

                Hilltop Brick heifer

                  | | Brick is a new graduate from Semex’s Premier Programme
in the USA, which has yielded previous high-ranking sires such
as Stouder Morty, R-E-W Buckeye and Diamond-Oak Frosty, and delivers
the functional traits the modern dairyman is looking for. Brick
is a son of Semex sire Outside – one of the most consistent
sires ever used in the UK, breeding cows that thrive in the larger
herds now common here – and is backed by four generations
                of excellent dams.
“Commercial breeders will see Brick as a very exciting
proposition because he is definitely his sire’s son carrying
many of Outside’s proven traits, promising cows with strength,
longevity, high yield and quality,” said Willie Tait, Technical
Manager Semex UK. “Like Outside, Brick has a high US Productive
Life score of +3.5 and a similar breeding profile. He also excels
for foot structure with a UK score of +2.42 for foot angle and
daughters that track extremely well on their rear legs, are moderately
tall with balanced frames, excellent width of chest, deep bodies
                and well-shaped rumps.”

Brick heifers are built for intensive milking and repeat lactations,
he continued: ”Udder formation is very strong and utility-led,
with very shapely udders with high, wide rear and fore attachments,
deep udder clefts, great teat size and placement and a silky
udder texture. Brick’s UK production figures of +374kg
                Milk, +20.7kg Fat (+0.08%), and +10.7kg Protein (-0.02%), together
with +2.65 Type Merit, make him an exciting prospect for a wide
                range of systems.”

                  | | “We also have a terrific pedigree option in Comestar Lheros
son, Karona Bonair, which entered the Canadian LPI charts at
No 12, with +15 Conformation, +11 Mammary System and +10 Feet
                and Legs,” continued Willie Tait.
“A combination of the Comestar Laurie Sheik family and
one of Canada's strongest maternal lines – Bonair is from
arguably the best Emerson daughter in Canada, Karona Emerson
Bonnie EX-92-CAN 3* which has five VG daughters to date – shows
through in Bonair's high ranking in Canada. Semex field staff
in Quebec have seen 60 daughters to date and report that Bonair
daughters are dairy with wide chests, hard tops and wide rumps
with a good slope. Their udders have a silky texture and lots
of veination while legs are very well set from both side and
rear view. Bonair will breed milky cows with high fat and protein
yields and which score highly for milking temperament and speed.

“This bull has built-in staying power, with the ability
to breed long-lasting, profitable cows - the kind that is returning
real dividends to producers,” he concluded.
