 The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. had forward 72 prime cattle, 1 young bull, 26 OTM cattle, 5,447 prime lambs and 5,352 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 4th September, 2008. A smaller show of clean cattle saw more quality sorts on offer, trade sharper by 6 ½p. Top price of 180.5p paid by Maurice Wharton Meats for a Limousin bullock from J. & N. Overall average was 129.3p, although the 3,842 lambs over 37 kilos averaged 132.4p, selling to a top of 148p per kilo for Beltex’s from Messrs Bell, Kirkton, Hawick and to £76.50 for Texels from Smalmstown. The 1,605 lambs under 37 kilos averaged 123.9p per kilo and to a top of 133p per kilo and £52.80 per head for Texels from Solwaybank.
