Husband-and-wife farmers David and Margaret Booth, of Broom
House Farm, Earby, sent out their second Craven Dairy Auction
champion at the October show and sale at Skipton Auction Mart.

It was exactly 12 months after they secured their first championship
success at Skipton with their pedigree Shawdale Holstein Friesian
herd. Giving 39 litres, the 2006 title-winner, like last year’s
victor a newly-calven heifer by Manat, sold for the sale-topping
price of £1,200 to Robin Boothman, of nearby Fence, Burnley.
The champion received the Craven Dairy Cup, presented monthly by
animal feeds supplier BOCM Pauls. Mr Boothman also purchased two
further DE & MA Booth newly-calven heifers for £1,120
and £1,030 respectively.
The reserve champion was an in-calf heifer due November from Marsden
Farms, of Oakworth, sold to David Shuttleworth, of Gargrave, for £970.
Jeremy Taylor, of Broughton, had a brace of newly-calven heifers
sell for £1,130 and £1,110 to Kenneth Wright, of Airton,
while Jennings Farmers, of Fountains, Ripon, also sold two newly-calven
heifers for £1,090 and £1,040, the former to Geoff
Church, of Asquith, Otley, the latter to Keith Downs, of Bingley.
Clive and Claire Gratton, of Warsill, Harrogate, also successfully
sold four newly-calven heifers, three to Mr Church for £1,140, £1,030
and £970, the fourth for £930 to Mark Ashworth, of
Clitheroe. Johnny Metcalfe, of Linton, who is coming out of milking,
sold a newly-calven heifer for £1,080 to Andrew Odgen, of
Cowling.
A five-strong contingent of well-bred 15-month-old Jersey heifers
from part-time farmer Mark Thornber, of Barkerfield, Worston, Clitheroe,
also sold successfully to four different purchasers. Two made £570
and a third was knocked down for £546.
Mr Thornber, who works for the family weaving firm of James Thornber
in Clitheroe, bought the Jerseys as month-old calves. “There’s
a lot more interest in Jersey milk again these days,” he
said.
The show was sponsored by Driver Hire Craven and Halifax, represented
by Suzanne Willmore, of Keighley.
