Lambert shearling ram champion at Skipton Dalesbred show

It was an all-round triumph for youth at the annual show and sale of Dalesbred rams, staged on behalf of the Dalesbred Sheep Breeders’ Association, at Craven Cattle Marts’ Skipton Auction Mart. (Tues, Oct 17)

The champion, a home-bred shearling ram from AD & CH Lambert, of Woodend, Raydale, Askrigg, was exhibited by 21-year-old Robert Lambert, while the show judges were 28-year-old Alison Haygarth, of Settle, responsible for last year’s champion, and 15-year-old Edward Hird, of Yockenthwaite.

The Lambert’s 2006 title winner was awarded the Royston Baxter Perpetual Trophy. The former long-serving foreman at Skipton Auction Mart was unable to be present this year due to illness, but Dalesbred sheep stalwart Joe Stoney, of Pateley Bridge, willingly stepped in to make the presentation.

Best of the aged rams came from JF & JK Wilson, of High Houses, Blubberhouses. The three-shear ram sold for the show-topping price of 200 guineas to M Dobson & Sons, of Bentham.

The top price shearling ram from BD & PN Gill, of Yarlsber, Ingleton, sold for 160 guineas to A & P Dixon, of Cross Hills, with the Gills also selling a shearling for 150 guineas to Miss WI Thwaite, of Winterburn. The third prize shearling from Mrs C Harrison & Sons, of Hill Top Farm, Blubberhouses, made 110 guineas.

Results: Forward 66 Dalesbred rams. Aged Rams – 1 JF&JK Wilson, Blubberhouses, 2 Mrs C Harrison & Sons, Blubberhouses, 3 J&AJ Coates & Sons, Ingleton. Shearling Rams – 1 AD&CH Lambert, Raydale, 2 R Jackson & Son, Horton-in-Ribblesdale, 3 Mrs C Harrison & Sons.

Prices: Shearling Rams to 160gns (av £58.52), Aged Rams to 200 gns (av £95.55).
