The Easter show of Spring lambs at Skipton Auction Mart – the annual fixture where butcher buyers or their ringside representatives purchase the region’s best lambs for their customers’ Easter tables - saw a debut championship success for Neil Tattersall, of Town Farm, Ellerton, east of York. Mr Tattersall, accompanied by his 13-year-old daughter Frances, on half term break from Woldgate College, Pocklington, secured his first-ever Skipton title at the fourth time of exhibiting with a pen of two Texel-cross-Beltex lambs, first prize winners in the Continental-cross show classes.
They sold at £128 each or 356p/kg to Red Rose buyer, M N Alam, of Lazeez Halal Meat Wholesalers, Blackburn.
Mr Tattersall, who trades as PA & NS Tattersall and keeps 350 Texel-cross and Suffolk-cross ewes, also presented the second prize Down-cross pen, acquired at £119 each by David Whitehead, of Whitehead Retail Butchers, Blackburn Road, Edgworth, Bolton.

The Suffolk-cross-Texel reserve champions, the first prize pen of Down-cross lambs from Mark Evans, of Tower Gate Farm, Steeton, sold for £130 per head to Kendalls Farm Butchers, who also acquired Mr Evans’ third prize pen at £120 each. They will be on sale from this Thursday at Kendalls’ two shops in High Street, Pateley Bridge, and Skipton Road, Harrogate.
David Towell,of Glusburn Moor, Keighley, presented the second prize pen of Down-cross lambs, sold at £108 a head to West Yorkshire wholesale butchers John Penny & Sons, Rawdon.
The third prize Continental-cross pen from Robert Towers, of Farleton, Lancaster, made £107 each when acquired by Calderdale meat wholesalers J E Medcalf, of Halifax.
Spring lambs sold to an overall average of 237.30p/kg or £104.13 per head. Show judge was Nick Dalby, of Hartwith, Harrogate, and sponsor Skipton-based Guy Machinery.
